Depends - mainly on your horse and what class you're showing in. I've seen a lot of trainers ride padded show horses with very loose reins at the barn, but they usually don't do this in the ring....

I noticed that some riders in shows will have one rein tighter than the other. Is this to keep the horse from turning his head?

That and to try to help keep the horse level or on the rail. A good trainer knows the key to a great horse is his mouth - the better the mouth - the better the horse.

This is probably one of the reason's I haven't started showing is not knowing what to do in training one or what to do n showing either.

When trailriding I like to keep my reins lose, not totally flapping, for saftey reasons, but they don't need constant pressure on their mouth when you are out on the trail. That can make a horse have...

I'm used to keeping a loose rein. I stopped at a barn last summer and rode two flatshod horses and the girl told me to keep a tighter rein on one more than the other one, to keep him collected.
